Archdiocesan Office for Youth hosts youth group indoor soccer comp
In the midst of World Cup excitement, more than 240 players from across the Archdiocese of Melbourne gathered on Sunday 22 June for a huge day of fun, rivalry and soccer at the first ever Archdiocesan Office for Youth Indoor Soccer Competition.
Thirty-two teams from parishes and communities around Melbourne descended on the Westgate Leisure Centre in Altona to battle it out for the AOY Soccer Championship.
Mixed-gender teams played 10-minute games in the preliminary rounds, with the top two teams from each group proceeding to the quarter finals.
Everyone got into the spirit, with teams creating their own t-shirts and bringing along passionate cheer squads for support.
After a gripping 2-all draw in the final, “Footsteps to Christ 1” from the Chaldean Catholic Community, took out the tournament in a penalty shoot-out against runners up “Kick like a Vegetarian” from the St Peter Chanel Youth Group in Deer Park.
A “Golden Boot” award was also awarded to the highest goal scorer in the preliminary rounds. Matt Ross from the Mazenod National Evangelisation Team won the trophy after scoring a massive 16 goals from four pool games.
The AOY were very grateful for all the teams who supported the event and for the wonderful spirit of the day. We look forward to continuing the tradition in 2015!
