Sparks of Beauty: Film

Sparks of Beauty in Film

‘Talk a little, listen a lot, say just enough, and look everyone in the eye.’ -- Pope Francis

The Sparks of Beauty series is back for 2019! The series seeks to enter into dialogue with speakers from a variety of fields – art, science, music, literature, sport – and celebrate the intersections between faith and life while encouraging a new imagining to Catholic spirituality in 21st century Australia.
The first gathering for 2019 will be a film screening of the Wim Wenders’ film, Pope Francis — A Man of His Word, which premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and was screened as part last year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).
More than just another documentary of a high profile figure in the world, the film seeks to illustrate what is at the heart of Pope Francis’ life and leadership: Christian hope. As film critic Alissa Wilkinson writes, ‘We’ve grown used to our leaders spewing words to obscure the truth. We’ve grown used to “alternative facts.” Leaders who actually live what they proclaim feel increasingly hard to come by. Pope Francis — A Man of His Word is a rebuttal to that model of leadership. Francis’s views aren’t easily categorized… and his words and lifestyle challenge everyone.’

Missed the 2018 sessions of Sparks of Beauty?

Last year, the Sparks of Beauty program took place in some of Melbourne's most notable locations – the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square and the State Library of Victoria. The purpose of hosting at these venues is to encourage conversations about spirituality and faith to take place outside of the usual spaces and 'in the marketplace'.
