Eucharistic Sharing

Communion with Ecumenical Guests Present

The following statement was published in the mass booklet for the Solemn Mass and Liturgical Reception of the Most Rev. Denis Hart as Archbishop of Melbourne on the 1 August 2001. It may be adapted for use at masses when it is necessary to inform non-Catholic guests of the practice of the Catholic Church in regard to the reception of Holy Communion.

We are honoured by the presence of members of other Christian Communities this evening. To receive Holy Communion in the Catholic Church, a belief in the real presence of Christ, and a full unity with the Church is necessary. Because this long desired unity does not yet exist, we regret that non-Catholics cannot be invited to receive Holy Communion.

Vatican II, Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) 16 (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 841):

"The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."

Vatican II, Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate) 3:

"The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all-powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even his inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God."
